Battle between Beowulf and Grendel

The battle between Beowulf against the monster Grendel features one of the most interesting and exciting fight scenes from the 2007 animated film. Beowulf gets to perform his acrobatic skills that defies the laws of physics and his bravery of facing the demon with a hand-to-hand combat.

Their fight scene can be short but as audience, I find it complete with so much intensifying battle between a human against a demonic beast. The thrill is that, a mere mortal human being was facing a monster with equality. So in my own perspective view of point, Grendel had a very huge advantage. Let us look further into their battle and analyze what had really transpired.

A Fair Fight

Beowulf’s plan was to confront Grendel all alone by himself while his army will draw the monster inside the mead hall and contained it so that he won’t be able to escape. This plan gives me the impression that the slayer was too confident about himself being able to slay the demonic beast.

Grendel

I do understand that being a brave and honorable warrior, he would rather choose to fight his opponent single handedly. But Beowulf even went beyond that, he explained to Wealtheow that he needs to face the demon fair-and-square. Since Grendel wasn’t wearing anything, he also needs to do the same. So he removed his armor, clothes and weapons right in front of the queen. I just wonder why he had to do it right at the presence of a women.

The Battle Begins

Grendel finally came knocking on the door of the mead hall. The door was locked so the monster had to force his way inside. Unfortunately, he seems to have a hard time dealing with the locked door until one of Beowulf’s men who became impatient attempted to open the door for their guest. As the soldier approached towards the door, Grendel was suddenly able to barge inside the hall and the battle had begun.

The soldiers were the first who moved and attacked the monster but just like king Hrothgar’s men, the demon simply tossed them around and ripped off their bodies apart like a piece of paper. Scream echoed around the hall and the slayer finally stands on his feet for a fight.

Grendel was so focused at attacking the soldiers so Beowulf kicked a large bowl that contains some kind of burning chemical that produced smoke around him. This finally caught the attention of the monster. Then suddenly, one of the soldiers came charging with his sword launched himself up and gave a struck on the demon’s head.

Unfortunately, Grendel’s head was too hard to cut so the soldier’s head ended up being chomped by the beast instead.

Now that there were no more soldiers who can careless attack the monster, Grendel’s eyes were now onto Beowulf. The demon charged towards the slayer by leaping high and stomped on the wooden floor sending the slayer high up on the ceiling. The ceiling had large wooden braces so he safely landed on them.

While behind the back of the demon, Wiglaf cleverly charged underneath and punctured Grendel from below with his sword repeatedly. But, it didn’t took long enough when the he got slapped away into the corner. Beowulf took advantage of Wiglaf’s diversion by jumping down on the monster’s shoulder and delivered multiple blows on its head. And at the same time, he dragged the monster falling down with his back on the hot burning floor.

The demon got hurt but it just made Grendel more agile and caught the slayer by his arms and hanging.

Grendel’s Weakness

Beowulf would have been defeated and got ripped apart just like everybody else if he didn’t figured out Grendel’s weakness. The demon actually has a very hypersensitive hearing which means, a powerful hearing ability. So the brave hero shouted at the top of his voiced until the monster released him from its tight grip.

Loud Sound

He did it again for the second time but kicked away sending him to Wiglaf’s corner.

The battle continues but this time, Beowulf was full of confidence. He repeatedly climbed back on the monster’s shoulder and targeted Grendel’s swollen ear. Then from the demon’s shoulder, he leaped onto the hanging chandelier and to the ceiling’s braces.

The chandeliers were being hanged by large metal chains.

Realizing the he no longer had a chance against the mighty slayer, the beast attempted to run for an escape towards the main entrance door. From the ceiling, the slayer chased him down and used one of the chandelier like Tarzan to prevent Grendel from fleeing out of the mead hall. And interestingly, the metal chain from the chandelier got wrapped around on one of the demon’s arm.

The monster still run for an escape but Beowulf made a quick move by pulling the other end of the chain and wrapping it around the large wooden posts of the mead hall (with the assistance of Wiglaf).

The Demon can talk

Grendel finally got caught stuck from the door. Beowulf attacked him physically and mentally with his intimidating words. And unexpectedly, the demon talked back and they were surprised. It seems that demons who has the capability to speak were rarely encountered by them.

So Beowulf introduced himself to the demon as one mighty slayer but he snapped out of control and forcibly pushed the door too much which caused Grendel’s right arm ripped off from his shoulder. This allowed the monster to run and finally able to escape.

Grendel ran back to their lair and cried a lot in pain on his mother’s hand. There he died due to the loss of blood and perhaps the severe damage of his ear.
