Grendel was able to escape from Beowulf's Hands

Beowulf was a demon slayer who already slain countless numbers of demonic creatures similar to Grendel. Thus, dealing against the demon Grendel was a common encounter for Beowulf. However, how did it happen that Grendel was able to escape out from the hands of the mighty Beowulf?

No one really knows that answer why Beowulf allowed Grendel to escape. But what happened was that, Beowulf was able to tear one of Grendel’s arms apart from his body. This made the monster cry in terrible pain with no chances of being able to win the fight. So instead of fighting down to his last breath, he run for escape and Beowulf failed to catch the monster.

Despite being able to escape, Grendel still died due to the loss of his one arm. Scholars had speculated that the possible reason for his death was due to blood loss. But in my own opinion, it could also be due to an infection which is in addition to loss of blood.

Going back to the question above, there could be two possible reasons why Beowulf allowed Grendel to escape.

The first reason was that, Beowulf probably went too over confident trying to impress everyone that he was the best hero or slayer of his time. Thus, instead of putting Grendel down to its end right away, Beowulf had to play around with his prey. And due to slight carelessness, Grendel had managed to find the perfect opportunity and escaped.

The second reason was that, Beowulf might be aware that Grendel was not alone. Thus, he intentionally allowed Grendel to escape who will surely return for reinforcement to get his own revenge. But in the movie, king Hrothgar claimed that the only monster around in his kingdom was Grendel which Beowulf believed. So they were unaware about the existence of Grendel’s mother who took revenge for her son.

Why did they not pursue Grendel when he escapes?

They did pursue Grendel when he managed to escape into the deep thick forest but they immediately gave up. It seems like Beowulf had no interest to chase the monster to ensure his victory. Thus, he was probably looking forward for a second match but it never happened because Grendel had unexpectedly died due to the loss of his one arm.

As a slayer hunter, it is actually their characteristic not to give up on their prey because they are good trackers. No one can escape from them ones they were given their own target. This is a skill that every hunter possesses especially to a highly famed slayer hunter like Beowulf. It is not just all about fighting skill. Thus, letting Grendel escape was probably intentional.

One good reason why Grendel’s escape can be considered as intentional was that, Beowulf had chosen to rip the monster’s arm instead of his head. If he went for the monster’s head then it was over.

Moreover, there can be several good reasons why Grendel had managed to escape out from the hands of Beowulf. But until this time, it will remain to be a mystery.
