Let me introduced to you one of the greatest actor who still lives today, “Sir Philip Anthony Hopkins”. He is a Welsh actor born on December 31, 1937. If you are going to calculate his age, you will surely be amazed. And as a great actor, he already acquired a lot of awards such as the “Academy and Emmy Awards”.
Aside from being a part of the 2007 Beowulf film, some of his popular movies includes Silence of the Lambs, The Mask of Zorro, Meet Joe Black and etc…
Now, Anthony Hopkins’ role on the 2007 Beowulf animated film was to portray king Hrothgar of Herot. It was actually his voice acting talent that was needed for the role.
The Accent to Use
According to Hopkins, when he was interviewed by “Robert Zemeckis” (the director of the movie) about the accent that he was going to use for his role but he was not really sure about it. Fortunately, he made a wise decision by saying that he will use his native accent “Welsh”.
In my own personal opinion, since this was the first time that Hopkins worked on the animation industry, it would be best to just use his own natural voice. Unless he really got a talent for shifting his voice to produce a more suitable tone for the character that he needs to portray.
I have already seen many other animated films voiced by other popular actors where they used their own natural voice. One of them is the WWE’s retired Superstar, “The Rock” or Dwayne Douglas Johnson. And of course, most of these animated films hits the top ratings.
Motion Capture Technology
Hopkins also claimed that the 2007 Beowulf movie was his first time working with the Motion Capture Technology. He then explained that he never knew what to expect even everything was explained to him. Even trying it hard still makes him clueless with no idea about how it works.
Everybody should understand that he is already old. At his age today, I find him quite impressive that he still possess such cognitive ability with the motivation to learn something that is too complicated for him understand. Actually, most average people who are already at his age got mental issues.
Did he Read the Original Poem?
One of the most interesting question asked was that, "Did he read the Beowulf poem back in school?"
Anthony Hopkins made a very funny response by saying “No” because he was hopeless at school. He claims that he can read words but he got a problem understanding what he was reading which make him very inattentive. This makes him one of those poor kids who are slow learners.
But prior to the creation of the movie, he made an effort reading the Beowulf’s modern translation. And according to him, it was very good.
I really do understand Hopkins’ childhood issue because I have several friends who are just like him. If they read a book especially orally or out-loud, they will lose their ability to grasp what they are reading about. Anyway, most of them managed to overcome it through practice or by doing constant reading. I believe that Hopkins already overcome it as well.
Portraying king Hrothgar
Based on how I observed from the movie, the character king Hrothgar was perfectly portrayed by Hopkins’ own voice. It was like, voice acting is a natural talent for him.
My kudos also goes the same to all other voice actors of the film. The portrayal of different emotions by the characters was there, the main reason why I thought that the film was composed of real or actual people the first time that I watched it.
