A movie won’t always be complete without characters who are funny just like “Hondshew” from the 2007 Beowulf animated film. He was actually one among the brave warriors of Beowulf’s army who traveled to Spare Dane to slay the monster Grendel.
Hondshew was no ordinary soldier where I think he was the third best fighter next to Wiglaf. And what I like about this guy is that, he was too brave enough that he boldly confront and laugh at dangers.
Another thing that I like most about Hondshew is that, he was the only character on the film who really made me laugh so much.
When Beowulf’s army arrived at the land of Heorot and made arrangement to king Hrothgar about slaying the demonic creature Grendel, there was this funny scene at the Mead Hall.
A women first started to give flirting body language to Hondshew. So as a man, he also flirted back. Wiglaf noticed what his men was doing so he gave his first warning not to mess any with the villagers.
Despite the warning, Hondshew just cannot resist flirting back with the women. So Wiglaf made a sarcastic remark revealing that his men already had a wife.
But later, the two went inside a small private room somewhere around the Mead Hall where they started to do a scene that was not appropriate for very young audiences. But before the excitement even began, the women remembered that it was almost time to leave because at any time, the monster will appear.
When Grendel started knocking on the large door of the Mead Hall, Hondshew was very impatient. Instead of being frightened just like king Hrothgar’s men, he boldly stood up and went towards the door to open it up for the monster.
I really do not know how the mind of this guy works. It’s like putting himself into a terrible danger is just like a game where he doesn’t care about his life at all. He even had a family which was according to Wiglaf.
As Hondshew approached the door, the monster suddenly barged in throwing him away due to the impact. This put him on the floor for a while as the rest started battling the evil creature.
Before Beowulf started to engage Grendel into a fight, Hondshew managed to recovered where he made his final one epic blow against the monster.
Out from nowhere, he suddenly leaped at a great height with his sword firmly grasps by both of his hands. The monster was caught by surprise that even Beowulf was seem to be completely amazed.
So with an epic move and blow like that, that could have finished the monster down for good. However, Grendel just happened to have a thick skull. As a result, Hondshew’s sword got stuck on the creature’s head where he was left hanging and very vulnerable.
Everyone’s expectation got turned bad when Grendel grabbed Hondshew and chomped on his head then chewed like a bubblegum. This is the last scene of this poor guy who was very close at stealing Beowulf’s fame.
I think, if he only had a better sword, perhaps a sharper one that can penetrate Grendel’s skull then he probably would have succeeded. But if no sword actually exists then he should had gone to the creature’s shoulder or arms. Anyway, he wasn’t aware though that Grendel had a hard steel head. Anyone even Beowulf would probably did the same thing if we are going to put them on that kind of situation.
What really bothered me about the scene was that, why Beowulf did not even attempted to save Hondshew? He just literally stood there watching his loyal brave men got chomped on the head. Even if he can’t save him, at least he should had taken advantage of that time. Maybe, he was just in total state of shocked.
Moreover, the voice actor behind Hondshew is “Costas Mandylor” who is a Greek Australian actor.
