The 2007 Beowulf movie is an animated film and the most common perspective by most individuals about animation is that, it is perfectly suitable for very young audiences. This may be true in the past when animation film industries can only produce animations that were far too close from being realistic that they do look so funny to watch in every aspects.
Today, animation has made a huge leap that most individuals who watched the 2007 Beowulf movie never realized that they were watching an entire fully animated film. Even I myself included. But when it comes to “age rating”, I highly “do not recommend it” for audiences who are below the age of 16 and here are the following reasons why:
Grendel’s Brutality
At the beginning of the movie, there is already a featured horrible creature in the name of “Grendel” who will make a huge mess by brutally killing almost everyone in the “Mead Hall” of “king Hrothgar’s” kingdom. He easily tossed the soldiers around, rip their bodies apart and one innocent women even got her head crushed by the monster’s hand.
Speaking about the head, “Hondshew” who was one of Beowulf’s soldier got his head chomped by Grendel. Thus, you do not want your kids to see these kinds of brutal and bloody scenes.
The Seductive Angelina Jolie
Aside from violence, there was “Angelina Jolie” with no clothing but her body was only covered with some kind of gold substance. Again, kids should not be seeing this kind of scenes.
Going back to Grendel, when Beowulf was about to face the monster, he removes all of his clothes right in front of the queen “Wealtheow”. Thus, he faced the demonic beast nakedly.
The Fire-Breathing Dragon
At the final end of the movie, Beowulf faced a fire-breathing dragon which is a very interesting scene that may be the only part that is appropriate for young audiences. However, there is still a short and unacceptable part that I deem as inappropriate.
When Beowulf failed to cut the dragon’s heart with his sharp knife because his other arm got stuck from the metal chain, he decided to cut his stuck arm leaving his armor sleeve stay connected with the chain. This gave him able to further his reach allowing the hero to grab the dragon’s heart.
The director of the 2007 Beowulf movie is “Robert Zemeckis”, he and his crew are the one who produced the 2004 “The Polar Express” 3D Christmas animated fantasy film. It is a family friendly oriented movie that became a hit when it was released in the theaters. It even holds a Guinness Book of Records for being the “first all-digital capture type of film”.
But unlike The Polar Express, Beowulf by Zemeckis is not for the whole family to watch.
Overall, Beowulf 2007 animated film isn’t a movie for the kids to watch. It is actually a parent’s own responsibility to monitor what their children are watching on the screen. If left unattended and they get to watch such kind of films then this could result into psychological issues of fear and anxiety.
