Review about the 3D Beowulf Movie

The 3D or animated version of the Beowulf movie was released back on 2007. It is one very amazing film that you will surely going to enjoy watching especially when you are the type of person who loves action and literature.

On this post, I will be sharing my review about the 2007 Beowulf 3D animated film. So if you haven’t watched the movie yet then I am warning you that, what I am about to discuss contains a lot of spoilers.

You do not want to regret it so go watch it first before you continue.

But for those who already watched the movie, let’s head on.

Positive Review about the 3D Beowulf Film

1. Very historical

Did you know that the story of Beowulf came from one ancient manuscript? The original author was even unknown.

Historical World

Anyway, watching this movie can give you some historical knowledge about what’s ancient Scandinavia look-like in the old age. One of them were the people had some good amazing cultures that is no longer being practiced today.

2. Beowulf was one mighty hero, adventurer and, king

Beowulf was portrayed on the 3D film as one mighty adventurer where he already slain too many monsters. There was a scene when he was swimming along with a companion.

It was actually a swimming competition.

Sea Monster and Mermaid

Unfortunately, there were sea creatures who suddenly chased them where the mighty slayer confronted them. He literally spilled their guts into the sea but it cost him to lose the match.

But the most interesting scene on the movie was when Beowulf battled Grendel at the Mead Hall. It was full of action and intensifying clash between human and monster.

Although, the slayer failed to slain Grendel from the Mead Hall but only ripped his right arm. The monster was able to escape and went to the cave in his own mother’s lair. And, he later died on the arms of his mother who had sworn to seek for revenge.

Beowulf became the king when he pursued Grendel into the cave and took the monster’s head out as a proof that the creature was no more. However, he lied about the water demon claiming the he had also slain it along with Grendel.

He pretty much enjoyed being a king because he had a lovely wife, Wealtheow and a young mistress, Ursula. But not until a huge dragon came to terrorize his kingdom.

Despite of his age, Beowulf fought the dragon but unlike Grendel, he died along with the creature.

3. The secret affair

What I had never expected about this movie was from the beginning until to the part when the water demon was introduced on the scene.

It was quite surprising that Grendel was the son of king Hrothgar who had a secret affair to the water demon. Then later, Beowulf also had the same hidden relationship with the reptilian creature where the dragon was his own offspring.

Secret Affair

Who couldn’t resist the temptation especially when the physical form or appearance of the water demon do exactly look-like, “Angelina Jolie”?

4. Fighting fair and square

Beowulf wasn’t just any other slayer around because he treated every opponent he had with equality.

Grendel doesn’t use any kind of weapon and armor where the monster was completely naked. For this reason, the brave slayer faced the demonic creature in similar fashion.

Negative Reviews Which I don’t Like about the Movie

1. The fighting scenes was too brutal

My common understanding when it comes to 3D or animated movies is that, they are catered for young audiences. But when it comes to this film, it is not, where there is an appropriate recommended age rating.

Scared Kid

One of the most gruesome scene that I’ve seen on this film that you do not want a kid to see was when Grendel chomped Hondshew’s head.

2. Grendel’s mother wore no clothing

This is another aspect why you shouldn’t let a young audience watch this movie. It’s because of Grendel’s mother was wearing nothing but some kind of gold substance flowing or dripping around her body.

3. Beowulf’s greatest weakness were beautiful women

It was so obvious that Beowulf has a very strong weakness against beautiful women especially to those that were not humans I guess.

Beautiful Mermaid

The film portrayed him being attracted from the lovely mermaid under the sea where they had a secret affair. I think this was actually the main reason why he lost the swimming competition and not because of the sea monsters.

Second was Grendel’s mother.

Poor Wealtheow and Ursula, Beowulf doesn’t want to give them a child but willing does to monsters.

4. A hero who was good at lying

Beowulf on this movie was not really a true hero or mighty slayer at all but a good liar. He first lied that he lost the swimming competition due to the sea monsters but the real reason was due to the mermaid.

Liar

He lied again by falling into the seduction and temptation of Grendel’s mother.

Conclusion

Overall, this 2007 Beowulf 3D animated movie is by far the best film that I watched as compared to the other older versions. But in comparison to the books, the story portrayed had so many changes made.

Let’s end this post with a question.

What’s your own rating to this movie? Just choose between “Good” or “Bad” then explain why.
