Unferth the Loyal Servant of Hrothgar

Hrothgar was the current king of Heorot when Beowulf and his army arrived to slay the monster Grendel. And before that, king Hrothgar had been into many battles where they defeated and conquered many of their foes.

The scene from the beginning of the animated movie, “Beowulf 2007”, king Hrothgar and his army were celebrating about their glorious victories. Then, when he spoke about their accomplishments, he called for the presence of his most trusted right hand, “Unferth”.

According to king Hrothgar, they won’t be so successful without the aid of his most loyal servant. So basing on how I see the whole situation, Unferth seems to earn enough reputation from the king to succeed his throne.

You have to know that king Hrothgar does not have any offspring beside Grendel who was not a human. I just can’t imagine Grendel being the only rightful or legitimate heir of Hrothgar’s kingdom.

When Unferth doubted Beowulf

When Beowulf and his army arrived into the land of Heorot to slay Grendel, Unferth was so doubtful about the adventurer if he really was the real Beowulf or just another fake slayer who will most likely to fail.

doubted

Well, it is actually natural for anyone to have doubts to someone claiming to be the person who has so much reputation or even considered by many as a legend.

Unferth’s men and Beowulf’s army even almost clashed into a fight just because of the curious doubts of the king’s most trusted right-hand assistant.

Even if he was the real Beowulf, Unferth still mocked him about losing from a swimming competition. His point was that, because of that lost, he probably won’t be able to defeat Grendel.

No matter what Beowulf would say to defend himself against the skeptic Unferth, it won’t change anything. He needs to show everyone in the form of action by slaying the monster rather than through words.

Unferth Apologized to Beowulf

The awesome battle between Beowulf and Grendel was so amazing. It is one of the best action scenes of the movie.

So when Beowulf displayed his might as a monster slayer and killed Grendel, Unferth humbly approached the hero and asked for his forgiveness from the previous rude behavior he did towards the slayer.

apologize

He even gave Beowulf a powerful sword that was passed down from his lineage. According to him, the slayer can use it to slay Grendel’s mother or the Water Demon.

Beowulf gladly accepted it. But when he faced the Water Demon, he actually didn’t used it that much. I think, he already did one single swing of his sword and that’s it.

Passing Down the Throne to Beowulf

My first impression about the character of Unferth is that, he will betray everyone from the kingdom. I have the hunch that he will go and serve Angelina Jolie who will turn him into one powerful monster that the hero will surely have trouble trying to slay.

Well, I was wrong. Unferth remained being the servant of the kingdom even when the king he used to served got replaced.

At the scene when king Hrothgar decided to appoint Beowulf as the next successor of his kingdom, he removed his crown and just carelessly tossed it to Beowulf. It’s like, he was forced to give his throne to the slayer which I think it has something to do with the secret deal between Beowulf and the Water Demon where he seems to be aware about.

crown

Isn’t it that passing a throne or just even handing it to someone must always be treated with proper care?

Gladly, Beowulf was able to catch it but immediately, Unferth took it away from his hands and said, “It can wait for the right time”. Then suddenly, Hrothgar jumped off from the parapet and he died.

Where was Unferth at the Ending?

As I already stated above, Unferth still served the kingdom even under the rule of Beowulf. Although, his services wasn’t needed that much because Wiglaf replaced him and all of his duties.

If you are just going to watch the movie again, there are some short glimpses of his appearances on the background.

When Beowulf died and got succeeded by Wiglaf, maybe Unferth can find his way back to his rightful spot of being the current king’s trusted right-hand.

Moreover, the voice behind Unferth is “John Gavin Malkovich” who is an accomplished American actor who already appeared in more than 70 films.
