Analysis of the Beowulf 2007 Movie

Beowulf 2007 animated movie directed by “Robert Zemeckis” is one magnificent film that contains a lot of interesting information especially for curious viewers. Every story actually has a hidden message or moral values that you can learn about.

On this post, we are going to dive much deeper into the movie’s story plot and make analysis especially to most of the unclear part of the film. This analysis won’t just be a summary or some short descriptions of the events. It’s a set of information that answers questions that you never thought about.

The Real Reason why Beowulf Lost the Race

When Unferth doubted the adventurer’s identity, it came down to a point where both ends up with a heated argument. Despite Beowulf’s reputation as a monster slayer, Unferth revealed to king Hrothgar and to the crowd of spectators that the adventurer lost a swimming competition.

Beowulf then explained to everyone why he lost and the entire flash back of his past takes over the scene.

There were only two of them swimming on the sea at a time of a violent storm. Unfortunately, large creatures like a flying fish suddenly caught up with the two. Upon noticing the sea monsters, Beowulf stopped and confronted the beasts alone.

My analysis to this is that, it only shows that slaying monsters was a more valuable accomplishment to him than winning a competition. So when he saw the sea creatures, he just can’t ignore dealing with them.

The monster slayer had slain the one-eyed giant disfigured creatures by cutting them with his sharp knife and spilled their guts on the sea. After doing so, he was still able to catch up with the other guy. But not until when he heard a voice deep at the bottom of the sea. He was called and got attracted by a beautiful mermaid where they had a secret affair.

However, Beowulf lied about his encounter with the beautiful mermaid. He claimed that he was dragged by another monster and he was able to kill it by driving his knife into its heart. But, his flashback shows a different scenario.

Mermaid

Anyone can make an analysis that Beowulf seem to have a strong weakness against beautiful women including demons who possess human physical attributes. This is the main reason why he had fallen quite easily to the charm and seduction of the Water Demon or Angelina Jolie.

Grendel and the Dragon

Assuming that you already watched the movie, Grendel was the son of Hrothgar while the dragon was the son of Beowulf. Both of these monsters were brought out into these world through the Water Demon’s secret relationship with the two mortals.

When Beowulf killed his dragon son, the creature had a human golden form similar to his mother Angelina Jolie. However, when Grendel died, he never turned to any human form where he remain as it was. My own personal analysis to this is that, Hrothgar was a pagan who don’t believe in the existence of God. This must be the reason why his son has that kind of evil look. Whereas, Beowulf was the complete opposite.

Anyway, it seems that Grendel was more of a favorite son by the Water Demon than the dragon.

Beowulf had Chosen to Die

When Beowulf managed to grab and ripped the dragon’s heart out, both of them fell down from the top of the castle where they end up at the beach just below the castle. There, the dragon transformed into its human golden form and the old hero pushed him away taken by the waves of the sea.

Shortly, Wiglaf came and from their conversation he mentioned a name who can possibly cure him back. He even stated that Beowulf can’t be killed by just a fall like that. By the sound of it, it was like that this wasn’t the first time that the hero fell from such height and survived.

Fell

This gave me an analysis that Beowulf must had chosen death rather to live. And, this was probably due to guilt. It was actually his own fault why the dragon was created which took many lives of his people on its first attack.

The former king of Hearot, Hrothgar had taken his own life by committing suicide after confirming that Grendel was dead passing down his throne to the slayer. My point is that, both of them had actually chosen to die prior to the deaths of their own sons.
