The person and voice behind the character Beowulf from the animated 3D movie that was released back in 2007 is an English and Television actor, “Ray Winstone”. He was born on 19th of February, 1957.
His first appearance in the entertainment industry was on a TV series entitled, “The Weeney – on the episode, Loving Arms” on 1976. Winstone’s career as TV actor made him more famous where he now have a lot of roles in various movies.
Enough about his background and let’s discuss more about his role in an animated movie, Beowulf.
Robert Zemeckis is the director of the 2007 Beowulf 3D movie. The reason why he had chosen Winstone to take the role of the main character was due to his performance on the Television show, Henry VIII.
I haven’t seen that TV show yet so I have no any comment about it. But for Zemeckis, he must had seen through Winstone’s voice acting a perfect fit for the role of Beowulf.
In my own opinion, Zemeckis was right with choosing Winstone for the role, his voice and the way how he delivered on the movie was quite awesome. The emotion was there and I felt it especially the part of boasting about himself with so much pride and ego.
No Idea about the Beowulf Poem
During Winstone’s interview for his role as the main character of the film, he knows nothing much about Beowulf like most of the other casts. According to him, all what he knows about was that, he portrayed a character “who was a hero and great warrior”.
Anyway, not knowing anything about Beowulf’s original story isn’t really that important because he and the other casts did their job well done.
Winstone Enjoyed the Experience
I thought that being the lead character as Beowulf did put a lot of pressure to Winstone. But according to him on his interview, he enjoyed the whole new experience of working with the animated film.
He also stated that they were even allowed to go on places like the theater that made them put more focus and concentration on the characters that they portrayed. Other than that, he said that “There was no time to sit around.”
Through those words alone, I can say that he had the passion and he took his role very seriously. He literally put most of his precious time when he mean that there was no time to sit around.
I wish that I also have such kind of passion because I often fail with my concentration due to many distracting things that are now available today.
Winstone’s Animated Counterpart
Did you know that the appearance of the animated Beowulf from the film was derived from the actual looks of Winstone himself? Although, they don’t really look alike unlike Grendel’s mother who perfect resembled Angelina Jolie.
Winstone claimed his 3D generated counterpart resembled himself when he was at the young age of 18. It is really quite amazing that the film makers managed to give an actual look of his younger self despite the fact that they didn’t even used any photo of him at that age as a basis. That was one powerful technology of the animation industry.
Aside from Beowulf, Winstone also played other minor characters which were the “dwarf performer” and the “golden man” who can transform himself into a dragon.
Conclusion
Ray Winstone totally nailed his role as Beowulf. Thus, I would really love more of him portraying animated characters with his remarkable and powerful voice.
