After watching the 2007 Beowulf movie, it is a common thing for me to do and research the actual people are talented enough to share their voice and gave life to the animated characters that they portrayed. What surprised me from doing this is that, some of the voices are from popular actors and actresses.
There is actually a long list of characters on this film but on this post, let’s just go for those who played the major roles. I am pretty sure that you won’t be interested anyway from a cast who only made a laugh or uttered short and none sense kind of words.
Ray Winstone – Beowulf, Golden Man and Dragon
He was the voice behind the main character, Beowulf. In my own opinion, he did a great job. The feeling and emotion can be felt especially the part when he introduces himself as the great and mighty slayer Beowulf. Aside from the main character, Winstone also did the short voice for the golden man who can transform into a dragon.
Brendan Gleeson – Wiglaf
Gleeson’s voice perfectly fitted for the character of Wiglaf. A big Viking type of guy with a calm voice of being a good leader. Wiglaf was actually the second-in-command of Beowulf’s small army.
Anthony Hopkins – Hrothgar
Hopkins is perhaps the most popular actor among the casts. According to his interview, working on this animated film was his first experience. Anyway, being a first timer or not - he still did a great job giving voice to the lousy king of Herot, Hrothgar.
Robin Wright – Wealthow
Wright who voiced Wealtheow has a soft voice that is so perfectly calm in every aspect the reason why I had fallen in-love with this character. I really wish that she’s real.
John Malkovich – Unferth
Unferth was the loyal assistant guy of king Hrothgar who doubted the adventurer if he was the real Beowulf or not. Malkovich’s voice matches with the character of the very skeptical Unferth.
Crispin Glover – Grendel
Grendel’s voice was so creepy but his cry gives the most chill out of me. Through Glover’s voice, this monster became the most horrifying character on the film.
Angelina Jolie – Grendel’s Mother
What would you expect? Angelina Jolie herself gave voice to her animated character who looks exactly just like her - Grendel’s mother or the golden snake. I would really find it weird if some individuals did it.
Alison Lohman – Ursula
Ursula just suddenly appeared as a new character at the near ending of the movie. She was a young women and mistress of the old Beowulf. Behind Ursula’s voice was Lohman who has the same tone as Wright. So pleasant and calm.
Costas Mandylor - Hondshew
Hondshew was one of Beowulf’s men who has humorous style of talking and attitude. Although, it was too bad for him that Grendel chomp off his head. Anyway, Mandylor gave this character an interesting comedic voice that really made me laughed.
Fredrik Hiller – Frisian Leader
Another character with a short scene was the Frisian leader voiced by Hiller. What I can say about Hiller’s voice is that, he did delivered it well and good. I can really feel the emotion as his character uttered words out from his mouth.
